Welcome to the very first Pine Ridge
Alumni Newsletter! Thank you to all
alumni who provided information for this
issue. Special thanks to Jennifer Austin

This is your newsletter, so please submit
letters, articles, updates, remiscences,
questions, and suggestions. We reserve
the right to edit for length and clarity

NAME THAT NEWSLETTER

What is the perfect name for a Pine Ridge
alumni newsletter? Something catchy?
Something nostalgic? We're looking for a
title, so send us your ideas! Submissions
will be published in the next issue
and you will vote for the winner. First
prize: the esteem of your classmates
(sorry, we don't actually have an
operating budget).

DEATH OF A FORMER TEACHER
========================================
Many of you may already know of the death
of Ann Shaffner, age 64, a fifth and/or
sixth grade teacher to many of us. She
died of a heart condition early last year
and was survived by her husband, sister,
two sons, and three grandchildren.
In addition to Pine Ridge, Mrs. Shaffner
also taught at Wakefield Forest
Elementary and Poe Intermediate in Fairfax
County before retiring from her forty-year
teaching career. She held a Masters in art
and education from Virginia Tech.
A scholarship fund has been established in
Mrs. Shaffner's name. For more information

LOSS OF A CLASSMATE

We recently received extremely sad news
of the death of our classmate Jina Kim
from leukemia some years ago. Prior to
her illness, Jina had been studying at
MIT. We will run a more extensive article
and are requesting information from those
who knew her well. She is fondly remembered.

MISSING ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

While we still have a list of unlocated
classmates, we will spotlight one or two
each issue in an intense data-gathering
effort. This issue we're looking at Renee
Anderson and Judy Bardsley. Send in your
memories and information and maybe together
we can find Renee and Judy.
Kinds of information to think about: did
you know middle names or names of parents
or siblings? Where did they go to junior
high or high school? Did they move out of
the area? Where and when? Have you had
any contact since Pine Ridge? Where and
when? Send in what you know, and we will
compile and share it and follow any leads.
Our goal: 100% location.

POST-PINE RIDGE CORNER
========================================
Of course, all the important people went
to Pine Ridge, but we still made friends
in junior high and high school. Here's
the place to share information on those
folks and post requests for contact
information. If you have information to
post or request, please send the name of
the student and the name of the school.
Cathy Edmonds Wehibe sends us an update
on Scott Shepard who attended Frost
Intermediate and Oakton High School.
Cathy and husband Steve visited Scott in
Houston over Thanksgiving. Scott is
married with a two-year-old son and owns
a growing construction company.

ASSISTANCE WANTED
========================================
We'd still like to establish a web page
for the Pine Ridge group. If anyone has
web space to donate or can locate a free
site, please contact us. This leads to
the next item, web design. Surely this
crop of geniuses has some HTML gurus who
would like to show off their skills.
Wouldn't it be great to have a place to
share information with each other,
including things like pictures which may
be difficult to send via e-mail? If you
can help or have suggestions for a web
page, please write to us.
Also, we are still without third and
fourth grade yearbooks. A couple folks
have let us know they still have theirs,
but may not be able to get to them for a
while. If yours is handy, please let us
know. We know we are missing at least
one classmate from our list.

START SAVING NOW!

Wouldn't it be great to get the whole
gang back together? A 2002 event is under
consideration--our 20-year Pine Ridge
reunion! We hope to have it on our old
home turf, since many of us have stayed in
the area, and it seems likely that many
others still have family here. What do
you think? Send us your ideas, questions,
and concerns, and let us know if you would
like to be on a planning committee. Stay
tuned to the newsletter for further details!
