A teacher for 40 years, Mrs. Shaffner taught in Fairfax County for more than 30 years. She served as a teaching team leader and peer observer. She also continually researched professional methods for improving education.
Mrs. Shaffner taught at Pine Ridge Elementary, Wakefield Forest Elementary and Edgar Allan Poe Intermediate School. She graduated from Westhampton College in 1955 and held a master's degree in art and education from Virginia Tech.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Don Shaffner; two sons, Hal Shaffner of Fallston, Md., and Tom Shaffner of Annandale; one sister, Pat Clay of Gloucester, Va.; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Clarendon Presbyterian Church in Arlington.
